ChatGPT recommends stores it can find, read, and corroborate. That gives you three real levers: make your store readable to AI crawlers, publish answer-shaped content that matches the questions shoppers ask, and build up third-party mentions on the surfaces assistants actually cite. What does not move the needle: engagement tricks on your own site, since ChatGPT cannot see your analytics, your quizzes, or your loyalty program.

A lot of advice on this topic guesses at a recommendation algorithm that does not exist. What exists is simpler: an AI assistant answering "what should I buy" either recalls brands from its training data or runs a live web search and quotes what it can read. Both paths are influenceable, and both reward the same work.

How does ChatGPT decide which stores to recommend?

Two mechanisms, and it helps to keep them separate.

Recall. The model has read a large snapshot of the web. Brands that appear consistently across many pages, with clear descriptions of what they sell, are the ones it can name from memory. This is slow to change and favors consistency over cleverness.

Retrieval. For current questions, ChatGPT searches the live web, reads the top results, and builds its answer from pages it can actually parse, with citations. ChatGPT's live search leans on Bing's index, which is why stores that never set up Bing Webmaster Tools are invisible to a large share of AI shopping questions.

Neither path involves your on-site engagement metrics. Time on page, click-through, and bounce rate are signals your analytics sees and the assistant does not. If a tactic only changes how visitors behave on your site, it is not an AI visibility tactic.

Can AI crawlers actually read your store?

The retrieval path fails at step one for many stores: the crawler arrives and gets an empty shell because every word is rendered by JavaScript. AI crawlers are lighter than Googlebot, and most do not execute scripts.

  • Check what a crawler sees. View your page source: if your product descriptions and blog content are not in the raw HTML, assistants cannot quote them.
  • Do not block AI crawlers in robots.txt unless that is a deliberate choice. GPTBot, PerplexityBot, and ClaudeBot are the ones shoppers' questions flow through.
  • Get indexed where assistants search. Bing Webmaster Tools is the unglamorous unlock for ChatGPT retrieval, and IndexNow pings get new pages picked up quickly.
  • Consider an llms.txt file. An emerging convention that hands AI crawlers a clean map of your most quotable pages.

What content gets a store recommended?

Assistants quote content that already looks like an answer. That has a specific shape, and it is the same shape we describe in our merchant's guide to AEO: a question as the title, a direct answer in the first paragraph, and structure an assistant can lift cleanly.

For a store, the highest-value version is catalog-anchored: buying guides and comparison posts that answer a real shopper question and name your actual products, with real specifics, images, and links. Generic advice posts compete with the whole internet; a post that resolves "which snowboard should a beginner buy" with concrete products you sell is the kind of page that gets products mentioned in AI search. We covered why the product weaving matters in blog posts that feature your products.

Keep product data boringly consistent while you do it: one store name spelled one way, clear page titles, accurate meta descriptions, alt text on images. Assistants connect mentions across the web by name, and inconsistent naming splits your identity into fragments.

Do reviews and third-party mentions matter?

More than most on-site tactics. When an assistant checks whether a store is worth recommending, it reads the surfaces it already trusts: marketplaces, review platforms, comparison articles, Reddit threads, gift guides. Ratings and review counts on those surfaces show up in its answers, sometimes verbatim.

The practical moves are ordinary: ask happy customers for reviews on the platforms your buyers check, aim for inclusion in category roundups, and answer real questions in communities where your category is discussed. One genuine mention on a surface assistants cite outweighs a page of on-site tweaks.

How long does this take, and how do you measure it?

Retrieval effects arrive first: a crawlable, well-indexed answer page can start appearing in cited answers within weeks. Recall effects, where the model names you unprompted, build over months of consistent presence. There is no submission form and no shortcut through either.

Measurement is refreshingly direct: ask the assistants the questions your buyers ask, monthly, and record whether your store is cited, mentioned, or absent. You can do it by hand, or run our free AI visibility check to see in a few minutes whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention your store when shoppers ask what to buy.

FAQs

Is there a way to submit my store to ChatGPT?

No. There is no submission portal or paid placement for organic answers. ChatGPT draws on its training data and live web search, so the fastest lever you control is content it can read: server-rendered pages, indexed in Bing, shaped to answer specific shopper questions.

Does regular SEO help with AI recommendations?

Yes. Crawlability, clear structure, and specific content help both. The difference is the target: SEO optimizes for a rankings page, while answer engine optimization aims to be the quoted answer. The overlap is large enough that good SEO is the right foundation, extended rather than replaced.

How do I check whether AI recommends my store today?

Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity the questions your buyers would ask, in a fresh session, and note whether your store appears in the answer or its sources. Repeat monthly so you see movement. Our free AI visibility check automates exactly that baseline for your domain.
