SEO optimizes your store to rank on a results page. AEO, answer engine optimization, optimizes it to be the answer an AI assistant gives when a shopper asks what to buy. The foundations overlap almost entirely, which is the good news: quality content, crawlability, and clear product data serve both. What changes is the shape of the content and where the "result" appears, a quoted answer with maybe one citation instead of ten blue links.
If you have heard the same idea called GEO, generative engine optimization, that is the same discipline for ecommerce: different label, same work. This post covers what actually changes for a store, what does not, and how to adapt without throwing away your SEO.
What is the real difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO is a ranking contest. You target keywords, earn links, tune technical health, and the payoff is position on a search results page where the shopper still chooses which link to click. Ten winners share the first page.
AEO is a quoting contest. A shopper asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question, the engine composes one answer, and it names the products, stores, or pages it found most quotable. There is no page two. Either your store is in the answer, with a citation if you are lucky, or the shopper never learns you exist.
That difference cascades into the work:
- Unit of competition: SEO competes page against page for a keyword. AEO competes answer against answer for a question.
- Content shape: SEO tolerates long intros and keyword coverage. AEO rewards a question as the title and a direct, liftable answer in the first paragraph.
- Click model: SEO traffic arrives to browse. The smaller stream that arrives from an AI answer already read the recommendation and clicked through to act on it.
What stays the same?
More than the rebranding suggests. Three constants carry over untouched.
Quality and specificity win both games. An engine ranking pages and an engine composing answers are both trying to surface content that genuinely resolves the query. Thin content loses twice.
Crawlability is the entry ticket for both. If your content is invisible without JavaScript, or blocked in robots.txt, it can neither rank nor be quoted. Fast, readable, well-structured pages serve every crawler that matters.
Knowing your buyer's actual questions is still the strategy. Keyword research and question research are the same activity at different grain. The store that knows what its buyers ask, in their words, feeds both machines from one list.
That overlap is why AEO vs SEO is a false choice for merchants. You do not migrate from one to the other; you extend one into the other.
How do you adapt a store for AEO?
Four moves, in order of leverage:
- Reshape content into answers. Question-form titles, an answer-first opening paragraph, clean heading structure, and an FAQ block where it fits. This is the largest single change, and we unpacked it in What Is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization Explained for Merchants.
- Anchor content to your catalog. When an assistant answers "what should I buy," it prefers content that names real, purchasable products with specifics. Buying guides built from your own catalog are the store-native AEO asset.
- Add structured data where it is honest. Product and FAQ schema help engines parse what a page asserts. Markup describes the content; it cannot rescue content with nothing to quote.
- Show up where assistants corroborate. Reviews, marketplace listings, and third-party mentions feed the surfaces AI answers cite. We covered that mechanism in how to get your store recommended by ChatGPT.
How do you measure AEO when there are no rankings?
This is where SEO habits mislead. There is no AEO rank tracker equivalent, and no analytics dashboard inside the assistants. Measurement is direct instead: ask the engines your buyers' questions, monthly, and record whether your store is cited, mentioned, or absent, and who is named instead of you. Alongside it, watch referral traffic from AI surfaces in your analytics; the volume is small today, but it arrives pre-sold.
If you want the baseline without the manual session, our free AI visibility check asks the shopper questions for your domain and shows where you stand in a few minutes.
Where is this heading?
The trend line is one-directional: more of the buying journey starts as a question to an assistant, and answer surfaces keep multiplying, AI Overviews on Google, shopping answers in ChatGPT, Perplexity citing sources by default. The stores adapting now are building the citation record those answers will draw on, and the constants, real content about real products a machine can read, are the same bet SEO always rewarded.
Treat AEO as the extension of the SEO work you already believed in, aimed at the surface your next customer is actually looking at.
FAQs
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. Search results pages still exist and still convert; answer engines sit alongside them and grow. The work overlaps enough that a store doing honest SEO is most of the way to AEO, and the remaining distance is content shape, not a new discipline.
Is GEO different from AEO?
Practically, no. GEO, generative engine optimization, and AEO describe the same goal of being the answer AI engines give. Ecommerce conversations increasingly say GEO; the merchant work, answer-shaped catalog-anchored content on a crawlable store, is identical under either name.
What should a store do first for AEO?
Baseline, then reshape. Check whether AI assistants mention your store today, then rewrite or create your highest-intent buying-guide content in answer shape with your real products in it. Those two steps produce the fastest visible movement, and everything else builds on them.
