How to Measure AI Referral Traffic on Your Shopify Store

AI referral traffic is visits that start with a click in an AI assistant's answer.

AI referral traffic is visits that start with a click in an AI assistant's answer. In Shopify, find it in the Sessions by referrer report, filtered to the assistants. In Google Analytics 4, read the AI Assistant channel Google added in May 2026. Clicks from Google's own AI Overviews and AI Mode are the exception: they count as ordinary Google organic search, and no report separates them.

What counts as AI referral traffic?

A visit that begins when a shopper clicks a link inside an answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Claude. Your analytics can tell where a visit came from in two ways: the referrer, meaning the site the click came from, and tags added to the link itself. ChatGPT does both for its search answers. OpenAI says ChatGPT "automatically includes the UTM parameter utm_source=chatgpt.com in referral URLs", so those visits arrive labeled.

The exception is Google. A click on a link in an AI Overview or in AI Mode counts as a normal Google search click, so it lands in your organic search numbers, not in any AI bucket. Keep that in mind for every section below.

How do you see AI referrals in Shopify?

In your Shopify admin, go to Analytics, then Reports, and open Sessions by referrer. Shopify describes it as the report that "displays whether your visitors are coming to your store directly, from search, or by a referral". Filter the referrer for the assistants. Shopify's own guidance is to look for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude or other AI platforms as the referrer, and for Gemini to filter the referring host for gemini.google.com. The Help Center calls these fields Referrer name and Referrer domain, so the labels in your admin may differ slightly from the guidance.

Three details change how you read the result:

  • UTM source. Shopify records each visit's UTM source, so ChatGPT's search links can also be found by their utm_source of chatgpt.com.
  • Marketing reports will likely miss it. Shopify attributes traffic to marketing when the link carries a utm_campaign parameter. ChatGPT adds only utm_source, so its visits will most likely not show in Shopify's marketing attribution. Read them in the referrer report instead.
  • A break in the series. Since September 21, 2026, Shopify filters identified bot sessions out of its session reports by default, while orders are unaffected. Session counts before and after that date do not compare like for like.

Shopify's Help Center does not document a dedicated AI channel, so for now the referrer filter is the method.

How do you track AI traffic in GA4?

Google added a built-in channel for it. Since May 2026, GA4's default channel group includes AI Assistant, which Google defines as "the channel by which users arrive at your site from sources like ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot, or Grok". It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google's launch note also names Claude, and Google does not publish the full list of sources.

To see it, open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition. AI Assistant appears as a row next to Organic Search and Referral. Switch the dimension to Session source to see which assistant sent each visit.

If you want your own definition, for example to make sure Perplexity is counted, build a custom channel group. In Admin, under Data display, click Channel groups, add a channel with a "matches regex" condition on the source that lists the assistants you care about, and move it above Referral so it catches those visits first. A standard property can have two custom channel groups, and Google says they can be applied to your reports retroactively.

Can you see traffic from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Clicks, no. In Search Console, a click on a link in an AI Overview or in AI Mode counts as a click in the Performance report, inside the Web search type, mixed with every other search click. In GA4, Google says its Organic Search channel includes AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Impressions, yes. Since August 31, 2026, Search Console's generative AI report shows your impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, date and device. It lists impressions, not clicks, so it tells you where you appeared, not how many shoppers clicked through. What decides whether you appear at all is in our guide to showing up in Google AI Overviews.

Why do the numbers undercount?

Treat every AI figure in your reports as a floor, for four reasons:

  • A visit that arrives without referrer information counts as direct, wherever it really came from.
  • Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode count as organic search.
  • OpenAI documents its tag for ChatGPT search links; the other assistants do not publish one.
  • When an assistant names your store without linking it and the shopper searches for you instead, the visit shows up as search or direct.

What do the numbers mean for a small store?

Expect small numbers, and watch the trend. Shopify's own data, published in May 2026, says AI-referred sessions "convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search" and grew more than eight times year over year on Shopify storefronts as of the first quarter of 2026. The same post is clear that organic search still refers more sessions to Shopify merchants than all tracked AI platforms combined. Adobe reports that AI traffic to US retail sites rose 235% year over year from January to May 2026, and that those visitors converted 40% better than non-AI channels, a year after converting 23% worse.

Those are averages across many stores, not a forecast for yours. What they do say is that a handful of AI visits a month is normal today, and that the direction is up.

What should you do with the numbers?

  • Look at where AI visitors land. The pages they arrive on are the pages assistants are sending people to. Those pages deserve your best product detail and the clearest answers.
  • Compare month to month, with the same report and the same filter each time, and mark the September 21 bot-filter change in your notes.
  • Pair visits with visibility. Analytics shows the visits assistants send. It cannot show the answers where you were left out. A visibility check covers that half, and our roundup of AI visibility tools compares the free and paid ones. In our test of 18 Shopify stores, stores appeared in only 9% of answers to shopper questions that did not name them, so being absent is the common starting point, and how to get your store recommended by ChatGPT covers what changes it.

How does Riten fit?

Riten measures the other half. Its free AI visibility check shows whether ChatGPT's answers to 10 real shopper questions for your category cite your store, and the emailed report adds Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. On Pro, it runs again twice a month. It measures citations, not visits: Riten does not read your analytics or report traffic, so use the Shopify and GA4 reports above for that side.

FAQs

Does ChatGPT traffic show up in Shopify analytics?

Yes. ChatGPT appears as a referrer in the Sessions by referrer report, and links from ChatGPT search carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, which Shopify records as the UTM source. Because ChatGPT adds no utm_campaign, those visits likely won't appear in Shopify's marketing attribution.

Can I see how much traffic comes from Google AI Overviews?

Not separately. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode count as Google organic search in both Search Console and GA4. Since August 31, 2026, Search Console shows your impressions in them, so you can see where you appeared, but not the clicks.

Why does my AI referral traffic look so low?

For most stores it is still small next to search: Shopify's own data says organic search refers more sessions than all tracked AI platforms combined. Some AI visits also arrive without a referrer and count as direct, and Google's AI features count as organic, so treat your number as a floor.
